The division is committed to creating opportunities and developing innovative strategies to broaden participation in the sciences and engineering in West Virginia. The Underrepresented Research Scholars Program is a grant opportunity that supports the meaningful involvement of outstanding underrepresented students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research at the undergraduate level. In October 2008, the division hosted “Building Diversity in Higher Education: Strategies for Broadening Participation in the Sciences and Engineering,” a national workshop for more than 120 policymakers, research administrators and faculty members committed to recruiting and retaining women, underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
Lab 304 Lab 304 was a cooperative project of the division's West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research and West Virginia Public Broadcasting. The series focused on science, technology and research initiatives in the state, and premiered in February 2008 with a story about the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in Pocahontas County. Stay tuned for the latest from West Virginia Public Broadcasting as this project with EPSCoR moves into a new phase in 2010. To watch videos from the previous series, visit the Library.
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation The Kentucky-West Virginia LSAMP supports the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, particularly from underrepresented ethnic and racial minorities. The Division of Science and Research supports the Kentucky-West Virginia LSAMP through its Underrepresented Research Scholars Program (URSP). Up to $40,000 of the funds for this grant program are reserved for LSAMP students.
