Investing in research improves education, economics

Investing in research improves education, creates jobs and steers youth toward careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines, all while increasing our society’s knowledge. In West Virginia, federal and state investment in academic research has tripled since the year 2000. West Virginia is now 18th in the nation in state-sponsored research and development expenditures, up from 37th in 2006.

The Higher Education Policy Commission’s Division of Science and Research directs the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), while also managing state-funded academic research programs, including the Research Challenge Fund and the Research Trust Fund.  Keep reading to learn about the benefits, successes and opportunities of science and research in West Virginia.
